Re-Imagining Reading: Books to Build an Inclusive Classroom

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

During this session, we will focus on the power of using representative and relevant texts to engage and empower readers. As teachers, we have the ability to expose our students to a variety of texts and help construct their identities as readers. This is largely influenced by the options available on our bookshelves and in our lessons. We need to consider what we are presenting to students in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, age, ability, religion, place, immigration status, genre, and format. All students deserve to feel a sense of belonging and recognition as part of their reading journey. We want to empower educators to feel confident in amplifying diverse voices and creating a more inclusive classroom environment.
