How can a school develop and implement a comprehensive literacy intervention block to support the skill development for all primary students? This session will highlight how one K-3 school implements a school wide intervention block to improve literacy levels for all students. In our BLAST (Basic Literacy Acquisition Skills Time) program, each student’s phonemic awareness and phonics skills are assessed and students are placed in small, flexible groups to receive instruction on a specific reading or pre-reading skill (such as rhyming, letter sounds, blends, long vowels, etc.). For a half hour every day, students travel to their assigned meeting place and work with a member of the school staff. Come learn about this locally-developed program, with numerous samples and resources shared.
