Emotion-Focused School Support: Helping them process big emotions quickly and return to learning

Sue will share an emotional de-escalation technique that is quick, simple, easy to remember and, best of all, it works for a broad range of situations, ages, and backgrounds. This workshop was developed by Dr. Adele Lafrance, (PhD Child and Clinical Psychology) specifically for teachers who were dealing with outbursts in the classroom or challenging emotional interactions with parents. Teachers told Dr. Lafrance that these interactions were creating a lot of stress and contributing to feelings of burn out. Dr. Lafrance adapted her work in emotion-focused family therapy to meet the teachers' needs in the classroom and Sue is the only person in Alberta trained and authorized to share her work. This workshop covers what happens in the brain when it is flooded with emotion, how the technique works to calm the amygdala and help the student's brain return to a flexible learning state.
