Introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
The Introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu presentation will include a brief history of this non-striking martial art, some fun hands-on training and an explanation on how BJJ can be incorporated into different Phys Ed programs. We will highlight how superior body positioning and the application of leverage can negate athleticism and strength allowing anyone to learn the skills necessary for efficient self-defense and sport Jiu-Jitsu. Having an opportunity to experience a variety of techniques will help session attendees understand how fun Jiu-Jitsu is as well as how easily a Jiu-Jitsu unit can be incorporated into any physical education program. The techniques are easily adaptable to suit learners of different ages and fitness levels. Attendees will receive a contact list for black belt Jiu-Jitsu instructors that can be brought in to guest instruct a Jiu-Jitsu unit at their school.

The New Standard for Warming Up: Skill Development, Fitness and Injury Prevention in Phys Ed
Presented in collaboration with the University of Calgary's Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre and the Be Fit for Life Network, join us as we explore how an evidence-based warm-up can develop safe and effective movement skills to create a foundation for continued physical activity participation. Based on research in Calgary schools, neuromuscular training warm-ups in PE classes can reduce lower limb injuries by 62%. This warm-up is featured on a new poster that you'll receive at the session. This session is part of the Health and Physical Education Institute co-hosted by Ever Active Schools and the Health and Physical Education Council.

Loose, but Intense: Harnessing Stress for Athletic Achievement
Stress can be your best friend and your worst enemy; let's get control of it together to help young athletes improve their performance. As a psychologist and football coach, I don't pretend to have a formula or any magic system--however, basic neurological principles married with coaching common sense can yield replicable, incremental results.

The Growing Sport of Roundnet (Spike Ball)
Roundnet is best described as a fusion between volleyball and four square. It's a 360° game played in two teams of two, with a circular net. The concept is very similar to beach volleyball, with each team having up to three touches of the ball before hitting it onto the net (instead of over the net like in volleyball). The rally continues until a team cannot return the ball or a fault occurs. Come out to this active session where you will learn progressions to teaching the game to students of all ages. This is an active session that will have a lot of opportunity to gain hands on experience playing this fast-paced sport.
